PC's Henry, Hardrick, McGuinness' Orton to attend NBPA Top 100 camp
Putnam City guard Xavier Henry, Putnam City forward Kyle Hardrick and Bishop McGuinness forward Daniel Orton are attending the 2009 National Basketball Players Association's (NBPA) Top 100 camp, which begins today and concludes Saturday at the University of Virginia.
The camp was created 13 years ago by the NBA Players Association to assist the top 100 high school athletes to develop their individual and life skills, on and off the court.
"They teach you life skills and have classes,”
said Orton, who attended the camp last year with Henry, Hardrick, Pawnee guard Keiton Page and Verdigris guard Rotnei Clarke. "They teach you stuff that will help you in the future.”
Generally regarded as one of the top summer camps each year, this year's version hosts 74 of the ESPN Top 100 for 2009, 18 of the top 30 for 2010 and four top prospects from the Class of 2011.
Many former and current NBA players, including Kermit Washington and Emeka Okafor, have assisted at the camp, providing coaching tips and participating in group discussions of a wide range of "life topics.”
"They have (life-skill) professionals who come in, make up situations and call people out of the stands and see what they do,”
Henry said.
In addition to the life skills development, the camp also focuses on basketball fundamentals daily before splitting the players into teams and holding a pool play-style tournament including playoffs on Saturday.
