Recruit returns home
The ever-newsy recruitment of Willie Warren grabbed another headline this week when Warren left school at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.
Warren averaged 23 points per game at Fort Worth's North Crowley High School as a junior last season, but this summer opted to transfer to Oak Hill, a prep school known mainly for preparing basketball players for college ball and the NBA.
Warren has decided to return to North Crowley, a decision which also put on hold a planned visit to Kansas.
"I knew he was having second thoughts before he even left to go out there," North Crowley coach Tommy Brakel told Sports Illustrated. "I think he missed home, his teammates and his friends."
Warren, Rivals.com's No. 12 player in the class of 2008, had planned to visit Kansas this weekend, but will reschedule. Warren is in no hurry, as he doesn't plan to choose a school until the spring.
Warren has narrowed his list to Cincinnati, Connecticut, Kansas and Oklahoma.
Thomas decision today
Forward Quintrell Thomas (6-8, 225) of Elizabeth, N.J. has completed his visits and told Rivals.com he will announce on Friday his decision between Kansas, Maryland, Rutgers and UNLV.
Twin forwards Marcus and Markieff Morris, who attended Late Night in the Phog last week, told Rivals.com that they plan to choose a school possibly within the next week, meaning they might cancel their scheduled visits to St. John's and Villanova.
Marcus is the No. 37 player in the class of 2008. Markieff is No. 74.
Henry likes Memphis
The Memphis Commercial Appeal caught up with 2009 guard Xavier Henry last weekend at Memphis' late night festivities.
Xavier Henry, who has offers from Kansas, Louisville, Memphis, Texas, Ohio State and North Carolina, isn't in a rush to make a decision. But he has a clear objective.
"I'm excited about Memphis because I'm ready to get things started, and they've got what I need to get to the NBA," he told the Commercial Appeal. "I want a school where I can get in and get out."
Xavier Henry is Rivals.com's No. 2 player in the class of 2009. He said his top three schools are Kansas, Memphis and North Carolina.
Florida FB ties
Kansas doesn't usually get much interest from Florida football players, but that appears to be changing. At least for now.
Apparently KU's TV exposure is helping, as the Jayhawks have caught the eyes of running back Jeff Brinson, a 5-foot-11, 205-pounder from St. Petersburg, Fla., who leads the state in rushing and quarterback Orhian Johnson of Brinson is far from choosing a school, but told Rivals.com he plans on taking a visit to Kansas.
Rivals ranks Brinson the No. 49 running back in the class of 2008.
Johnson (6-2, 178), who could play several different positions in college, has offers from Kansas, Ohio State, South Florida, Cincinnati, Indiana, Florida International and Ohio.
KU has just one Floridian on its current roster, freshman receiver Tertavian Ingram, whose father lives in Topeka.
KU assistant Louie Matsakis, who coaches running backs, is the lead recruiter in Florida. According to Rivals.com, he is currently targeting two other Florida players, offensive lineman Troy Niblack (6-4, 271) of Orlando and athlete Marcell Rose (5-9, 180), who has no Division I scholarship offers.
